The Mona Lisa is a very dull painting with a few interesting aspects about it. The colors that Da Vinci uses are very tedious and the woman isn’t even in an exciting pose. In a way, it relates to the Old Guitarist’s dull blues, but in Picasso’s portrait, he uses the blues to put an emphasis on the sorrowful mood, and in the Mona Lisa the colors just make it unexciting. The background of the Mona Lisa is relatively "exciting," but again, the colors aren’t very interesting and they don’t catch your attention. The focal point is her head and chest, which don’t contrast well with the other colors, unlike in the Old Guitarist where the guitar is very bright compared to the surrounding colors. The pose of the Old Guitarist expresses sadness and a sense of grief and sorrow, but in the Mona Lisa she just sits and stares out of the painting. All in all, the Old Guitarist is pretty much a better painting than the Mona Lisa. By: Roland Synnestvedt and Sacha Reihani |
