Comparing Portraits

The Scream is more memorable than the Mona Lisa, in my opinion. While the Mona Lisa was made in oil paint, Munch did not limit himself in the media used, choosing crayon and tempera. The colors in the former are in striking contrast-the orange sky reflected on the dark blue sea and on the brown deck, and streaks of other colors throughout the painting. The Mona Lisa has gentle, realistic colors with a gloomy feel. Munch’s lines pointed every which way, confusing the eye of the viewer and painting a metaphorical image of the subject’s fright. Da Vinci's lines serve mostly to frame the Mona Lisa and accentuate her face. Also noticeable is the use of light-Munch shows his mostly in complementary colors and Da Vinci uses the Renaissance practice of chiaroscuro.
This portrait has a clear emphasis on the subject. The bald, gaunt head immediately captures the attention of the viewer. The railing draws the eye towards the dark, hunched figures and then to the turbulent orange sky. Deep contrast creates in intense picture of conflict. The Mona Lisa also emphasizes the subject's face but does not have such clear movement. It has weaker contrast and focuses on balanced color.
Although the Mona Lisa is well painted, The Scream is far more memorable because of its unsettling look and its strong message. It speaks of the deepest fears and insecurities of humanity. Viewers carry its intense look with them long after they stop admiring it.
