In "Girl Sewing" by Mary Cassatt,
the soft colors give the picture an approachable look. The pastel yellow
colors of the dress give the effect of a sunny day. The girl in the painting
is looking down, as opposed to staring straight towards you, which would
make you want to look away. Her eyebrows are furrowed in concentration.
Cassatt gives the background a blurred out of focus look, making the girl
the focal point. The artist uses highlights and shadows to show the creases
and ruffles in the texture of the dress. The shadows and highlights also
give the painting form, and makes it realistic. There is rhythm in the
different shades of pale yellow and green, as almost every color in the
portrait has a little yellow or green in it. The face of the girl is the
emphasis, as it is the least blurred and has the contrast of the brown
eyelashes and eyebrows, which draws your eyes to it. Overall the painting
has a feeling of serenity and laziness, the kind you have on the weekend.
