MultiMedia Art WebPage Lesson Plan

Art Then and Now

GOAL: Students will produce webpages that compare and/or contrast a piece of artwork from Ancient Civilizations or the Middle Ages to a piece of artwork from Modern times. They will need to use the elements and principles of art in their vocabulary.

Art Standards to be addressed:

Artistic Perception Observing, processing, and responding to sensory information through the language and skills unique to the arts The students will analyze the similarities and differences of two pieces of art, one from the past and one from the present. They will communicate their interpretations and support their conclusions using the vocabulary terms of the elements and principles of art in their content.
Historical and Cultural Context Understanding historical contributions and cultural dimensions of art Students identify two artworks that have similarities and explain the historical significance of each on a web page.
Creative Expression Creating performing and participating in the Arts Students create a webpage in which the layout and color choices demonstrate the use of the elements and principles of art.

Anticipatory Set:

Discuss goals of the project a week in advance so that students can begin to formulate a theme and take or collect pictures. Students turn in a tentative plan at the end of the week.

Pretest

Students list the Elements and Principles of Art and write a description of each one as best as they can.

Day One Objectives: Discuss goals of the project again

  • Give Pretest
  • Discuss possible choices of art for the project and discuss why
  • Uses of web pages in general
  • Design standards for web publishing-power point slide presentation of the elements and principles of art
  • Give URL for art research and begin to research

Day Two Objectives: Making a layout on paper of the web pages

  • Discuss copyright issues
  • Review searching the internet on Altavista
  • Students have photos to scan or images from the web
  • Remind students to get starr locker numbers and passwords

Day Three Objectives: Learn how to use Adobe PageMill

  • Review web site ratings of prior lesson and finish-ask why this exercise is important
  • Review saving procedures, desktop, create text folder and image folder
  • Go over the Menu basics
  • Using a theme that has already been chosen, students will create two practice pages and link them together.
  • Type some text at the top and center it, open inspector from the view section, change font, color and size
  • Change background color (gray is default-white is a good choice)
  • Make bullets and a list-go to Format>List>Choose One
  • Make another page that you can link to from one of the bullets
  • Show how to make a link to another page in PageMill
  • Test link in browser mode

Day Four-Six Objectives: Create layout of web pages

  • Discuss Header, Body, and Footer of a web page and what should be in each section
  • Turn in an outline on paper of the proposed web pages, including text and images
  • Review principles of design-how well are students following rules and tenets of good design
  • Discuss navigational tools-icons and internal text links
  • Work in PageMill on development of final project
  • Pages must be complete and ready for correction

Day Seven-Eight Objectives: Final Fix of webpages and completion of project

  • Discuss assessment rubric at the highest level
  • Compare rubric to the evaluation of web site form
  • Check that all files and images are in the same folder
  • Check webpages in Netscape on a DIFFERENT computer
