Web Page Lesson Plan

Goal: Students will create web pages for the "Cultural Connections" project. They will use an html editor, Adobe PageMill, and include the following: an imagemap, sized text, background colors, horizontal rules, icons, list or table, and links.

Anticipatory Set: Show "Cultural Connections" website and discuss goals of the project. Give students a choice of which page they would like to work on. Students can work in pairs if they wish.

Day One Objectives Feb 18: Learn how to use Adobe PageMill

• Review saving procedures, desktop, create text folder and image folder

• Go over the Menu basics

• Using the "connections" theme that has already been chosen, students will create two practice pages and link them together.

• Type some text at the top and center it, open inspector from the view section, change font, color and size

• Change background color (gray is default-white is a good choice)

• Show how to import another textured background

• Make bullets and a list-go to Format>List>Choose One

• Make another page that you can link to from one of the bullets

• Show how to make a link to another page on the internet in PageMill

• Test link in browser mode

• Remind students to get starr locker numbers and passwords

Day Two Objectives Feb 22:

• Uses of web pages in general

• Design standards for web publishing-power point slide presentation of the elements and principles of art

• Show "Connections" web site and evaluate

• Students select page or project in "Connections" to work on

• Learning to search the web-demonstration and play game, students give name and say how to search

• Evaluation of web sites-students use a spreadsheet form to evaluate websites

• Demonstrate use of Imacs

• Remind students to get starr locker numbers and passwords by next day

• Assign homework

• Review web site ratings -ask why this exercise is important due 2/25

Day Three Objectives Feb 23: Design layout of Project Begin Research for links, backgrounds, and images

• Discuss copyright issues

• Review file saving and naming of files-prepare handout

• Review searching the internet on Altavista and Yahoo

• Students save link urls and info in word document

• Turn in an outline on paper of the proposed web page, including link urls, text, and images

Day Four Objectives Feb 24 (CLASS and LIBRARY CLASSROOM): Create layout of web page and work on links

• Discuss Header, Body, and Footer of a web page and what should be in each section

• Work in PageMill on development of project

Day Five Objectives Feb 25 (LAB): Learn how to export image as a transparent gif

• Demonstrate how to get an image and import it into Photo Deluxe for manipulation

• Save>Export as Gif89 to image folder>select options>choose transparency

• Remind students to save space at the bottom for links to all "Connections" pages. Show how to import those links into PageMill

• Review principles of design-how well are students following rules and tenets of good design

• Continue working on project

• Students save all work on starr and on disk (except iMACs)

HAND IN HOMEWORK

Day Six March 1 (CLASS and LIBRARY CLASSROOM): Work on Project

• Discuss assessment rubric at the highest level

• Compare rubric to the evaluation of web site form

Day Seven Objectives March 2 (LAB):

• Continue work in lab

Day Eight Objectives March 3 (CLASS and LIBRARY CLASSROOM):

• Remind to check folders and be sure that all files are in correct place-show drawing on the board. Are they named correctly?

• Check links on another computer other than the one you have been working on

• Continue work

Day Nine Objectives March 4 (LAB):
