Harlem Renaissance Celebration, October 26
Prior to October 26, students will learn about the poetry and prose of
the Harlem Renaissance in many English classes, practice swing dancing
in PE, learn to play Jazz of the time period in Music classes, create
masks and collages in Art, make authentic recipes in Home Economics.
The actual event day should be very exciting and informative. In the morning
students will have an opportunity to attend an assembly about the history
of swing dancing directed Dr.
Richard Powers, of the Stanford University Dance Division.
At lunch students and teachers will gather by advisories and eat together.
Entertainment will be provided by Dee
Spencer, Director of Jazz Studies at SFSU, who is a renowned jazz
pianist, and our own Mr. David Brigham.
D uring the extended advisory period students will attend three mini assemblies,
organized by grade level. In the cafe they will listen to the songs of
SoVoSo (http://www.sovoso.com/);
they will have more swing dance instruction in the gym provided by Ms.
Anne Remsen of the Starlite Ballroom; and students will attend one of
the coffee houses, sponsored by twelve volunteer teachers, who will provide
information about the Harlem Renaissance relevant to the curriculum they
teach.
