Description and Requests, posted 10-19-2004:

We are planning a Dia de los Muertos celebration and hope you will want to participate. This folkloric event will be held on November 3rd during lunch and the Advisory period. Advisory teachers and their students will be encouraged to enjoy lunch together on the grass in front of Hugh Center Court. During this time the Stanford Folklorico Dancers will perform on the stage. There will be a one hour Advisory/SSR period that includes a 20 minute time slot to visit the “ofrendas” or memorial tables displayed at five sites on campus, optional 20 minute lessons about Dia de los Muertos will be provided, and 20 minutes for SSR or discussion about the folkloric holiday. During the Advisory period there will be the Tapatio Mariachis from San Jose playing outside the library, a group of student folklorico dancers from the northern part of Jalisco in the Hugh Center courtyard, and surprise treats along the way.

What Can Teachers Do?

  • Plan ahead and reserve an informative video about Dia De Los Muertos from Ron
  • Choose an important person relevant to your curriculum that you can memorialize, print a picture, gather articfacts to lay on one of the ofrendas
  • Discuss the holiday a week or two in advance so that students can bring copies of pictures of people they would like to remember
  • Join us at lunch and plan a picnic to share with your Advisory during the festivities in Hugh Center Court
  • Encourage your students to ask their parents to visit this website and find out how to help you

How Can Parents Help?

  • Bring Flowers in vases for one of the ofrendas-there will be 5 ofrendas on campus, one each in the A, E, F, and H wings, and one between the office and library
  • Come to the picnic in Hugh Center Court at noon, join your student, bring a blanket to sit on, and food to share
  • Make cookies to help Mrs.Shagory, who is attempting to make 900 cookies, one for each student who visits the E wing ofrenda. Click here for the recipe.
  • Make Pan Muertos for your student's Advisory. Click here for the recipe.
