LANGUAGE ARTS
¥ Read Hello World! Greetings in 42 Languages Around the
Globe! New York: Scholastic, Inc. Have
students identify how many greetings they know collectively in different
languages and create a classroom list of greetings that represents the
diversity in their group.
¥ Create a classroom book with short stories and drawings about equality and inclusion.
¥ Have a special event called AuthorÕs Day where students will review books on the Theme of the Month.
LITERATURE
¥ Have students read books about great citizens (e.g., Mother Teresa, Benito Ju‡rez, Booker T. Washington, Jane Addams).
¥ Read The Journal of Ben Uchida Establish a Book Review Day. Ask each student or a small group of students to find a creative way to present a book review to the class.
SOCIAL STUDIES
¥ Students can work in small groups to make a list of their contribution to help make their school a Safe and Caring School.
¥ Discuss some of the history of the community and the neighborhood around your school. Explain to students that an important part of good citizenship is the sense of pride for being involved in their community doing positive things.
MATH:
Mathematicians are People too by Luetta Reimer
ART
Inspirations: Stories About Women Artists by Leslie Sills. Review how the four artists in the book created their art based on their own personal interpretation. Have students work on a common theme and display their art to show the uniqueness of each.
¥ Have students design a school bulletin board describing what it means to be respectful.
¥ Create posters or murals to show ways students and adults make everyone feels part of their school community.
