Student Council Report – Maryssa Sklaroff & Britta Kajimura

Green Citizen campaign in April – Couldn't supply with everything needed that month; will run after Star testing in May

Pennies of Patients – certificate for pizza; Levy/Sano core decided to donate the money

Asked to support stuffed animal drive, toy drive, toiletries drive – Stuffed animal drive only

May – elections for next year & Green Citizen

 

PrincipalŐs Report – Suzanne Barbarasch

Four servers at lunch (instead of three), lines moving quickly; one line for cash only; other three for pin #

IS positions – Math (Ellie Slack), Social Studies (Mark Allendorf); still looking for English IS

Class trip letters mailed home with guidelines for expected behaviors; trip dates are 7th grade –June 8th, 8th grade – June 11th, 6 grade –June 12th

Katya Peterson of Safe and Caring Schools – Ed Council – to work on comprehensive bullying program for next year; Suzanne will bring info to May meeting

Site Council surveys will be administered starting tomorrow (11th -25th); contest for most returns for the advisories

International Festival April 25th – 6-7:30; entertainment, food

Social Norms program – based on survey that covers substance abuse and bullying; hope to promote positive peer pressure; teachers will get new stats and will kick off a door decorating contest

Need to approve the school safety plan, SIP plan, analyze surveys, assemble and approve budget – lots of work

 

PTA Report – Glenn Krasner

PTA assisting with the Int'l Festival

Second round of direct appeal brought in enough funds that won't be making any more budget cuts; in good shape for rest of year

JFC committee met last month – had about 15K worth of requests for 4K; ended up satisfying everything

PTA officers for next year posted – among them Maria Lim President, Susan Shiel (EVP)

Parent Ed last month and at this month's meeting

 

Biotech Elective Proposal & 7th Grade Science Proposal

Budget presently at $29,677.54

 

Biotech Proposal - $8884.25 (if Tami Warr not instructing the Science Dep., agreed to use the equipment for this course); APPROVED

 

NEW Science Proposal - $1,395.35; to fulfill a state standard req. in 7th grade; Questions –There are films mentioned but no budget line item for them – is this on purpose or not? Are these routine purchases or not? Do other schools have life size or table-top skeletons?

Review of Safety Plan – Christina Regalia

Looking primarily at first 24 pages

 

A. Personal experience of students and staff – Objectives – 1. To increase knowledge for both staff and students regarding the diversity of student pop; 2. To provide staff with an understanding of the law and staff's personal responsibility for teaching students with special needs and necessary strategies to have all students be academically successful

 

How met: Teaming, team meetings, parent events, staff meetings; monthly foci -  Oct. Katia Peterson, Jan. ELL, Feb. Diversity Day – Milton Reynolds and Katya Peterson, March Spec. Ed, April – Cultural Evening sponsored by World Languages; TASC mentor program, AVID, GATE

 

B. Physical Environment Objectives - 1. Campus Operations, 2. Relations with PA police and ancillary services, 3. Emergency procedures, 4. Updating Safety Plan

 

How met:  "Tardy talk with district attorney"; supervision schedule, including noontime angels; renovations - planting and gardens; bullhorns; drill schedule- fire, earthquake; Oct and April are District wide drills; first year of lockdown drill -  students had to learn how to make a door barricade and barricade for protection ; new Tuff shed for emergency equipment provided by district (still have a container of extra supplies); enough water and food for 72 hours, space blankets

 

C. School social environment – Objectives - 1. Site Discipline Plan (review and revise) 2. Increase knowledge of staff and students with regard to sexual harassment and other gender issues

 

How met: Grade level counselor and principals will visit each class to review all policies; peer-helping program for conflict resolution; investigating bullying prevention program

 

D. School Culture – Objectives – 1. Develop programs to prepare students for community and democratic society, 2. Recruit mentors, 3. System to identify and assist at risk youth, 4. Create opportunities for creative and athletic expression

 

How met:  Advisory; 8th grade career day; pride assemblies; honor roll ice cream; AVID, Reading and Math Academies, Homework Center, TASC, HST, SST, Team Meetings; 6th grade Wheel, Math nights, lunch clubs, art exhibits, after school sports, intramurals, drama and concert productions

 

E. Electronic Equipment and Internet – Objective – 1. To increases the knowledge of staff and students on the proper use and care of computers as well as ethical and legal issues

 

How met:  Students sign Internet use agreement

 

Other items:

Cameras – will place in Cal Ave bike cage and snack bar areas

Doors – replace locks and handles a possibility; idea of using key cards for large areas such as the gym or Cafetorium

Guard services post custodian shifts (possibility)

 

Question regarding locker safety and supervision
