Sashiko employs traditional Japanese motifs borrowed from natural farms such as leaves and designs. These are created by repetition of the needle work. Sashiko may have come into existence north of Japan's show country. This style of quilting is a reflection of the hard days work, individual isolation and power of natural farms. Sashiko strengthens the cotton cloth and improves the insulation qualities for the cold winters. It is believed that needlework reflects an immediate mind, depth of one's heart and the artisan's mystic quality. Students created these designs using thick white floss on blue cotton material on these 4 examples. |
