Museum of Cultural Connections
Purpose of this Site

The purpose of this Museum is to make many connections among teachers and students, history, literature, and art in the sixth and seventh grade social studies curriculum. Social studies students can develop a deeper understanding of historical periods and people from various ancient and middle ages cultures while visiting this museum, as well as finding assistance for research projects. It is also possible and encouraged to submit project work, art work, research links, and lesson plans to share.

This museum is ongoing and has been developed using project-based-learning, a method in which students acquire new knowledge and skills in the course of designing, planning, and producing a multimedia product. While all parts of this museum are not necessarily exemplary, all are hoped to have the following components:

  • be anchored in core curriculum and be multidisciplinary
  • have sustained effort
  • involve student decision making and collaboration
  • have a real world connection
  • contain systematic assessment
  • use more than one type of multimedia

This web site is tied to a larger Cultural Connections project supported by Challenge 2000, Jordan Middle School Site Council, and the Palo Alto Foundation for Education. Not only are students in humanities and art creating web pages, they are learning and teaching multimedia design, producing Microsoft Power Point presentations and Adobe Premiere digital videos, and creating art projects reminiscent of the time periods. All of these endeavors help to form connections between past and present, and a deeper understanding of the real world.

Two rubrics have been developed thus far for the Cultural Connections project:

  • Multimedia Design
  • Web Page Design
