Editorials-Pop-ups: Good or Bad?
Say you have just visited a website and came back with a negative comment. Why? Was it because once the main page was loaded onto your computer, dozens of smaller windows popped up, crashing your Internet browser?
Pop-ups are appearing on more and more sites these days. Pop-ups are annoying windows that "pop up" in front of your computer screen once a page with a certain script coding is loaded, and usually contains advertisements that may interest the web surfer so as to generate money for the website's creators. Pop-ups generate more revenue than banner advertisements on the website because they draw more attention then a small 468x61 pixel banner that usually doesn't even take up a quarter of the page. Usually, most websites with pop-ups only have one or two, but some ignorant webmasters decide that they want a lot of extra revenue and overload the page with 5 or more pop-ups, often crashing older computers and older Internet browsers. Those with newer computers and browsers though...usually decide that the pop-ups are too annoying and never want to go back to that website again. Even though most do, a lot of webmasters don't have the common sense to see this problem. Their eyes are either blinded by their greediness, or they have never visited their own site before and have never seen how annoying pop-ups are. At least, when webmasters put banner advertisements on the page, they don't crash computers, unless they are really big in file size.
Well folks, there's an easy way to solve this problem. Many people have recognized this problem long before I was born (well, not that long...I'm just exaggerating.) and have figured out a solution to this problem. Many programs have been produced to "kill" pop-ups before you even see them. I have listed some below:
PopUp Killer 1.45 - Free - OS: Windows (all) - File Size: 3.39MB
Exit Killer Popup Terminator 3.0 - Free to try, $30 to buy - OS: Windows (all) - File Size: 827 K
Advertising Killer 1.2 - Free - OS: Windows 95/98/NT - File Size: 956.63 K
These links will open in a new window when clicked. For more programs, try searching CNet Downloads.
On my last note: Webmasters, don't do pop-ups! Pop-ups bad! Banner advertisements good! Now, let's move on to the next editorial, all pop-up free =)
